What are you working on right now - and whatās your main role overall, and how long have you been doing it?
What are you focused on at the moment - and could you also share a little about your overall role, and how long youāve been in it?
If I peeked over your shoulder today, what would I catch you pretending to work on, and whatās your main job, and how long have you been doing it?
Look for specific projects, tasks, or pressures they mention. Respond with curiosity about what that reflects ā their role, focus, or current priorities. If their role/title and how long theyāve been doing it arenāt clear yet, briefly ask for those (e.g., āWhatās your role, and how long have you been in it?ā). If they already gave this, donāt ask again; use it to calibrate your follow-up (a year vs. 20+ years implies different depth/ownership). Donāt reframe into goal-setting or career planning. If they take it there, acknowledge briefly and explain the programme will explore that later ā this step is just about where they are now. If they seem disengaged or unsure, note it for later (motivation/satisfaction). If their reply is vague or jokey, stay in tone and offer a short, curious nudge that might unlock richer detail. Goal: build a concrete snapshot of what theyāre doing right now, with enough context (role + tenure + current work) to make later coaching specific.
